Petrol and diesel prices have witnessed a hike, after almost two months, post assembly election results were announced in five states -- West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.

On Tuesday, May 4, petrol became costlier by 15 paise and diesel by 18 paise even as international crude oil prices continue to dip amid falling demand in COVID-hit countries like India.

In Mumbai, petrol is priced at INR 96.95 per litre. However, Parbhani has the highest petrol rates in Maharashtra at INR 99.34 per litre.

In Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, fuel prices have crossed INR 100 crore. In Delhi, petrol is priced at INR 90.55 per litre and diesel at INR 80.91 per litre. After 18 days, petrol and diesel prices have gone up.

Assembly elections have been underway in five states for the past two months. Petrol and diesel prices did not go up even as crude oil became more expensive. Now that the elections are over, petrol and diesel prices have started going up, experts suggested.

Though, the state-run OMCs and the government have maintained that there is no correlation between elections and transportation fuel price freeze.
