In the export sector, Gujarat has taken the lead in NITI Aayog's 'Export Readiness Index' list of states, thus a picture of Maharashtra's backwardness in exports has come to light, as per the report by Loksatta. Maharashtra used to be at the forefront in all sectors like industry, foreign investment. Even in exports, Maharashtra had the highest share. But this picture is changing now. NITI Aayog has prepared a report on 'Export Readiness Index' and it has been released recently. Tamil Nadu ranks first in the list of states in creating a conducive environment for exports. This is followed by Maharashtra.


In the fiscal year 2021-22, the highest export from the country was from the state of Gujarat. In this too, Maharashtra has become the second highest state. According to the NITI Aayog report, Gujarat accounted for 30 percent of the total exports from the country in 2021-22. The share of Maharashtra at the second position was 17.33 percent. Maharashtra was the number one state in exports in the financial year 2019-20. Then the state's share was 20.71 percent and Gujarat's share was 20.25 percent. In the year 2020-21, 20.76 percent of exports were from Gujarat and 20.01 percent from Maharashtra.

Last year, Gujarat jumped from 20 percent to 30 percent, while Maharashtra fell behind. Fuel and petroleum products are exported on a large scale from Gujarat. Niti Aayog has observed that the share of Gujarat has increased because of this. Exports in Gujarat have increased from $63 billion to $127 billion a year.


Major exports from Maharashtra are medicines, diamonds, iron and steel. Among the top five districts in the country in terms of exports, three are in Maharashtra and two are in Gujarat. 12.18 percent was the highest export from Jamnagar district in Gujarat, which has an oil refining plant. Surat (4.75 percent), Mumbai suburbs (3.75 percent), Mumbai city (3.70 percent), Pune (2.73 percent) have exported in the past years. NITI Aayog has prepared a list of Export Readiness Index states for future exports. Tamil Nadu state has taken the lead in this. The NITI Aayog has classified the states based on the pre-defined criteria. Tamil Nadu state scored 80.89 percent out of 100. Maharashtra is the second ranked state. The states of Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana rank next.
