According to the latest reports, since the Mumbai traffic police commenced penalising pillion riders too for not wearing a helmet, 25,076 pillion riders have been caught in Mumbai in the last 10 days. 

Based on accounts, from the 25,076, the foremost number of pillion riders have been caught in the south region at 10,948. The data reportedly further brings to light that aside from pillion riders, 15,994 helmetless riders have also been penalised. Moreover, in nearly 2,745 cases, pillion riders and riders were fined for not wearing helmets. 

For those unversed, the drive began on June 9 at the bidding of Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey. It was on May 25 that the traffic police issued a notification and gave 15-days of warning to pillion riders sans helmets. On June 9, the authorities commenced the special drive. Herein, the majority of the cases were in the city's south region with 2,100 from the 2,334 filed throughout Mumbai. 

Recently, on the other hand, the traffic police highlighted that by means of the law, two-wheeler owners must demand helmets when purchasing bikes from dealerships. It is said that under section 138 (4) (f) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989, the manufacturer should provide two helmets to the buyers during purchase.
