24 deaths reported as walls collapse in Chembur and Vikhroli

As per reports, the torrential rainfall in Mumbai on Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18, led to the incident. NDRF officials mentioned that the landslide was caused due to the rain which eventually led to the collapse.

Rainfall lashed with strong winds in the city of Mumbai and surrounding areas on Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18, 2021, due to which many low lying areas of Mumbai were flooded. Reports also state that the flooding affected several houses and residents in the city. 

As per reports, a wall collapsed in Mumbai's Chembur area on Saturday, claiming several lives and the debris fell on the adjoining houses. Rescue teams reached the spot immediately to remove the debris. A total of 15 people were killed in the incident and team is still present at the spot. Rescue operations are still underway and more civilians are believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Another similar incident was reported in Mumbai's Vikhroli area where a two-storey building collapsed, killing nine people. The accident took place in Bharat Nagar in Chembur's RCF area. Soon after the incident, the locals immediately started the rescue operation at an individual level. Information was passed on to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team which rushed to the spot for further investigation.

Officials informed that the NDRF personnel are also facing major difficulties in conducting rescue operations due to the mud that has accumulated due to the rain. The hill located at the back of the houses had raised suspicions several times, and a torrential downpour in the midnight caused a wall to collapse on more than five houses, injuring the residents.

Besides this, another accident was reported in Mumbai's Bhandup area where a 16-year-old boy, identified as Soham Thorat, was killed due to a wall collapse in the Amarkot area. The boy was trying to get the water out of the house, during which the rocks and soil located on the mountain came down. Residents nearby tried to get him out of the rubble, however, he was announced dead soon after.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  shared condolences and express grief. The statement released from the PMO said, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to wall collapses in Chembur and Vikhroli in Mumbai. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that those who are injured have a speedy recovery."

He also announced INR 2 lakh as compensation  for the families of the deceased and INR 50,000 for those who were injured.
