A fire broke out at the Bhanu Farsan shop in the Makhariya Compound on the Khairani Road on Monday morning killing at least 12 employees trapped in the flames.

The Fire Brigade Control room received the alarm at around 4:17 AM. Three fire engines and four jumbo tankers were immediately sent to the spot and the fire was extinguished within 10 minutes.

According to the Chief Fire Officer P.S. Rahangdale, Mumbai Fire Brigade, the fire started at the ground floor level and the people inside were sleeping in the loft. Due to intense heat and smoke, the loft subsequently collapsed and the people got caught in the 60 by 30 feet structure.

After the cooling operations were completed the officials started sifting through the wreckage for victims and pulled out 12 unidentified charred bodies. The dead bodies were then sent to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, as confirmed by the officials of Disaster Management Unit of the BMC.

The Fire Brigade will soon be submitting a report to the police stating the cause of the fire which is believed to have started due to a short-circuit. Meanwhile, the Saki Naka police are working on identifying the deceased as well as probing to find out about the safety measures taken by the shop owner.
