The historic Holy Cross Church near JJ Hospital got restored with the combined efforts and sustained zeal of 200 odd parishioners, including Usha Lazarus, whose family’s six generations have been parishioners in the church.

Erected in 1898, this Anglican church is 120-years-old and took 15-20 years to build and has borne severe flood conditions but has still stood the test of time. It belongs to Renaissance or Classic Revivalist style due to its pilasters, semicircular arches and balustrades, though the architect is unknown.

The interior of the church has semi-circular vents and coloured glass panels. The pulpit which is as old as the church itself has been restored instead of replacing it with marble alternatives; likewise, with the benches, some of the tiled flooring, and the full-length glass windows. Parishioners like Richard Rangare, Rajesh Tejore, Sangita Lammuel, Elizabeth Rangari, Dhananje Share, and many others have helped so that the church could see the light of the day again. While the initial spadework began in March 2017, main work started post monsoon. Approximately ₹35-40 lakhs have been spent on the project.

UNESCO-award-winning conservation architect Vikas Dilawari played a key role as honorary advisor for the project.
