Navi Mumbai: 13-Year-Old Boy Dies, 10 Injures After Slab Falls During Tuition Class in Building

The building has 16 flats and is about 30-years-old. The renovation work had started in the building about a year ago. However, no work was done on the roof slab.

A roof slab collapsed during a tuition class was being conducted in a building in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, March 5, which led to the death of a 13-year-old boy. Meanwhile, 10 other children were injured during the incident that occured in a residential building in Koparkhairane between 4:30 pm and 5 pm.

The accident took place at Vidya Bhavan society when a slab from a ground-floor flat suddenly collapsed. At that time, Shyamali Chaudhary, 53, was conducting a tuition class at her home. Eleven children were present for the lesson when the slab fell.

One of the students, Manish Mhase, 13, died from injuries. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Regional Disaster Management Department said the boy suffered serious head injuries. He was taken for treatment but died later.

Ten other students between the ages of nine and fourteen were injured in the incident. They were taken to nearby hospitals for medical care. Only one child, Aaradhya Dhanwade, was reported safe after the incident and was handed over to family members.

Some of the children were admitted to Apex Hospital in Koparkhairane. These included Nishika Dhanwade, 13; Ayesha Khan, 11; Devansh Pujari, 12; Siddhant Gupta, 9; and Rajdeep Varkhade, 11.

Other injured students were taken to Lions Club Hospital and nearby facilities. These children included Tanvi Sachin Srivastava, 10; Rudra Pravin Patil; Prince Soni, 14; and Kulsum Khan, 13. Parth Khairnar, a 12-year-old resident who lives on the first floor of the building, was also admitted for treatment after being injured.

After the collapse, rescue teams rushed to the location. Firefighters from Vashi, Koparkhairane and Airoli, along with the NMMC Regional Disaster Management Department, carried out rescue and relief work. The children were rescued and taken out of the building.

Authorities evacuated the entire building after the incident. The building has 16 flats and is about 30-years-old. The renovation work had started in the building about a year ago. However, no work was done on the roof slab.

Civic officials visited the site and the hospitals. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil, Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat and NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde met the injured students and reviewed the situation.

Authorities have arranged temporary accommodation for residents who were evacuated from the building. The affected families have been shifted to Annasaheb Patil Cultural Bhavan in Koparkhairane. NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde also ordered an immediate structural inspection of the building.
