The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 134 buildings in dangerous condition in Mumbai. These were found during a recent pre-monsoon inspection.

Last year, the number of such buildings was 188. Out of the 134 structures listed this year, 57 have been vacated. These buildings are now being demolished.

However, 77 buildings are still occupied. Some of them cannot be cleared yet due to stay orders from the court. These structures are classified as "C1." This means they must be evacuated and torn down immediately to avoid any disaster.

The highest number of such buildings are in Bandra West, Khar, and Santacruz West. Each of these areas has 15 risky buildings. Goregaon follows with a slightly lower count. Jogeshwari, Andheri East, and Ghatkopar have 11 dangerous buildings each.

The BMC is taking steps to remove legal obstacles to help the authorities speed up the evacuation process. As per sources, some residents are refusing to leave. The civic body has tried to cut their water and power supply. Still, many remain inside.

As per reports, the number of old buildings has reduced over the years. But there are still many unsafe ones left. The BMC carries out structural audits of buildings over 30 years old. The results help the civic body group the buildings and decide what action is needed.

Interestingly, some buildings are fit for repairs. Others are beyond repair and need to be demolished. The BMC publishes the full list of risky buildings on its official website: www.mcgm.gov.in. These actions are taken every year before the monsoon to avoid accidents.
