Navi Mumbai and Panvel civic bodies have ordered the evacuation of 146 buildings marked as “extremely dangerous”. The decision comes after a building collapse in Kalyan earlier this week that killed six people.

As per reports, the monsoon is expected to arrive earlier than usual. To avoid more accidents, residents must leave these risky buildings immediately. If not, their water and electricity will be disconnected.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) owns 66 of the buildings. The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) owns the remaining 80.

On Thursday, May 22, NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde inspected pre-monsoon work. Shinde also directed the town planning and anti-encroachment teams to inspect buildings, ward by ward.

The NMMC has also set up shelters and community centres. These will be used in case of emergencies. Teams are working to shift people living in landslide-prone areas. They are also removing hutments blocking drains. Ambulances and medical supplies will be ready if needed.

The PMC has shared a list of unsafe buildings on its website. The 80 buildings fall in these wards: 18 in Ward A, 15 in Ward B, 10 in Ward C, and 37 in Ward D.

As per reports, PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale said people living in these buildings must vacate as per orders from the state government and the Bombay High Court. If they refuse, the PMC will disconnect water and power and demolish the buildings with police help. Chitale added that building owners and residents will be held responsible if a collapse occurs.
