In a significant development, 2023 has seen a decrease of 15% in fatalities caused by falling from trains on the Mumbai Suburban Network. In 2022, Mumbai local trains witnessed a tragic death toll of 700 commuters, but 2023 resulted in a total of 590 deaths.

In 2022, 648 male and 52 female commuters lost their lives after falling from packed suburban trains. The Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) reported 190 and 510 fatalities, respectively.

As per data, CR saw 431 deaths and WR recorded 159. There were a total of 535 male and 55 female fatalities.

The decrease is credited to the railway authorities' starting thorough safety measures. A notable measure was the addition of 11 new suburban services by WR in 2023. This increased the total number of services to 1,394.

The number of suburban services with 15 coaches increased from 132 in December 2022 to 199 in December 2023. This strategic move increased the carrying capacity of 67 suburban routes by 25%.

WR introduced 96 close-door air-conditioned train services. This was a 21% increase from the number in December 2022. CR also made significant changes by substituting closed-door air conditioning for ten non-airconditioned suburban services.
