While the incident of five children drowning at Juhu Chowpatty was still fresh, a major accident was averted at Aksa Chowpatty in Malad on Sunday.


As many as 19 tourists have been saved from drowning due to the vigilance of lifeguards. Tourists were literally pulled into the water in a crater created by a natural eddy in the sea. Between 4:45 pm and 6:45 pm, the crowd started getting out of control. So the police had to be called for security. Meanwhile, more than 40 tourists living in various areas like Chembur, Malad Malvani, Kandivali, Borivali had entered the water. In the part of the sea where these tourists went, the tourists started being pulled into the natural whirlpool pit.


At that time the lifeguards Eknath Tandel, Bharat Mankar, Sameer Koli, Milan Patil, Prasad Baji, Viraj Bhanji, Jayesh Koli of 'Drashti Life Saving' rushed the tourists out of the sea. However, 19 people were trapped inside. They managed to save them. Ten of the 19 people have been registered by the police, while nine have escaped, lifeguards said.

After last week's accident in Vakola Santacruz area in which five children drowned at Juhu Chowpatty, the municipality has increased its focus on the safety of major chowpatty namely Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai. It has been decided to appoint 120 trained security guards at all major intersections. Earlier, 94 lifeguards have been appointed by the fire brigade on contract basis.
