On Thursday, July 17, 2020, Thane's Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) evacuated 11 families from a 20-year-old building which developed cracks. Located at Thane's Khopat, Sai Anand Apartment has nine rooms and three shops. As per reports, the structure is a four-storey building was on the verge of collapsing and had developed massive cracks. 

The situation of residents living in the building and nearby residential areas was vulnerable. It is also reported that members of the adjacent chawls were also shifted to a Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC)-run school, as this would be safe for the citizens during the heavy rainfall.

RDMC chief from Thane Santosh Kadam confirmed the happenings. Upon knowing the details, rescue teams from RDMC, fire departments, and police stations were sent to the location. 

Over the last few days, parts of several buildings in Mumbai collapsed due to the dilapidated state. On July 16, two buildings - a three-storey Chawl in Malvani, Malad and a six-storey MHADA’s Bhanushali Building, near Lucky House in Fort area - collapsed, where some injured were rescued by the respective teams and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
