6 killed In Fort Building Collapse

According to an update given by ANI 23 people were rescued and 6 people lost their lives in the incident where a part of Bhanushali Building collapsed.

On July 16, portions of two buildings collapsed in Mumbai. One was a three-storey Chawl in Malvani, Malad and the other was a six-storey MHADA’s Bhanushali Building, near Lucky House in Fort area.

According to an update given by ANI 23 people have been rescued from the debris. It also adds that as many as 6 people lost their lives in the incident where a part of Bhanushali Building collapsed.


According to a report in Indian Express, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said that the building was in a dilapidated condition and few families had vacated the building a few months ago but some families had decided to stay back. The repair work of the building was going on at the time of the collapse.

Kishori Pedhnekar, the Mayor, said, “Strict action should be taken against the owner/builder of this building. The building was declared dilapidated, even if the owner was not interested in reconstruction, the owner should have at least shifted the tenants/residents out of the dilapidated structure."

The repair work of the building was going to start from April 1st but due to the lockdown the work could not start on time. As soon as the information of the building collapse was given to the authority’s vehicles of the fire brigade and necessary vehicles reached the spot for rescue operations.

Mumbai has been witnessing severe rainfall over the last few days, and currently, the city is under red alert. 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday visited the building collapse site in Fort amid the rescue operation. He visited the site to take stock of the situation and review the rescue operations being carried out. He was accompanied by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal. Earlier, Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad also visited the site. 

Besides these, three other incidents were reported in Mumbai over the last month, where structures had collapsed due to several reasons. One of it was at Grant Road in July, and two others structures - one in Kurla and the other in Khar - collapsed in June.
