The Mumbai traffic police have written to the regional transport office (RTO) to suspend the licenses of 2,446 bikers for three months who were caught riding sans helmet in the past 11 days, cited reports.

These are reportedly repeated offenders who have ignored summons to visit the nearest traffic police chowky and attend the two-hour lecture on traffic rules and safety, mentioned accounts. 

Based on narratives, if the offender does not visit the police chowky, through text messages reminders are sent to them to attend the session. However, if they fail to do so, further action is then undertaken. 

According to reports, from April 6 to 16, the traffic police registered FIRs against 15,609 bikers for riding without helmets. A senior traffic police officer was quoted in accounts elaborating on how notices were sent to 3,951 offenders to visit the chowkys. 

The officer added that 1,947 were asked to go through the two-hour lecture on traffic rules. They have thus, asked r the RTO to suspend the licenses of 2,446 offenders. It has been reported that in the last month, the traffic police issued 75,000 e-challans to bikers caught riding without a helmet. 

Recently, the traffic police started a drive to decrease the incidents of helmetless riding, which causes fatal accidents on the roads of the city.

The Mumbai traffic police have been bringing into force various initiatives to make city roads more pleasant. These include limiting honking in Mumbai.
