The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 30-hour water shutdown starting Tuesday, May 5, affecting several parts of South and Central mumbai.
The temporary shutdown is necessary for commissioning a new water tunnel project designed to improve the city’s water distribution network.
The disruption will begin at 10 am on May 5 and continue until 4 pm on May 6, as authorities undertake critical infrastructure work to commission a new water channel originating from Amar Mahal.
The core objective of the maintenance window is the integration of a major water channel under the BMC’s Water Supply Project.
This project involves connecting a new tunnel from Amar Mahal (Hedgewar Udyan) to the Pratiksha Nagar area, which further links to Parel, the Trombay reservoir, and the Turbhe high-level and low-level reservoirs.
Authorities said that the upgrade will strengthen supply efficiency in the long run, though residents in affected areas are advised to store adequate water in advance to manage the disruption.
Residents in M/West (Chembur) and N Ward (Ghatkopar) will experience a complete shutdown on Tuesday, May 5, followed by low-pressure supply on Wednesday. Conversely, areas in F/North, F/South, L, and M/East wards will face the primary brunt of the disruption on May 6.
Additionally, water supply will be provided at reduced pressure in other specific locations.
Mumbai residents are strongly advised to store adequate water before the cut and to use it judiciously during the disruption. This includes refraining from unnecessary usage and preparing in advance for the cut. The civic body emphasises the importance of judicious water use during this period to mitigate inconvenience.
The BMC has also recommended boiling and filtering drinking water for the following four to five days after supply resumes to ensure safety.
The authorities will make concerted efforts to complete the maintenance work efficiently and restore the normal water supply as quickly as possible.
