Out of the 170 CCTV cameras installed on the platforms in Thane railway station, it has been revealed that 34 cameras are not in working condition for the past several weeks.
A year and a half ago, the railway police had requested the railway administration to install 50 CCTV cameras in the station. That too has not been completed yet. About seven lakh passengers travel to and from Thane station every day. More than 2500 long distance trains leave daily along with suburban trains.
Police always appeal to be careful of pickpockets and mobile phone thieves during rush hours. In case of such incidents, the police use CCTV footage to trace the accused. Besides, accidents often happen in the crowd. Often there are clashes between passengers. Sometimes tampering with ticket checks happens as well. After attacking them, some run away. Incidents of misbehavior against women are also often pointed out.
Currently 170 CCTV cameras have been installed in the station to monitor all these things. However, the station is currently not fully covered by CCTV due to poor management of the railways. Due to this, it is believed that in the future it will be difficult to trace the accused in case of any mishap, accident or mishap in the areas without cameras. The station has 170 cameras, out of which 34 cameras are non-functional. While some cameras have been removed due to construction of bridges, roof repairs, some are off due to mechanical failure.
Waiting for additional cameras
Although CCTV cameras have been installed in Thane railway station to monitor the crowd and prevent untoward incidents, the number of these cameras is insufficient. GRP police have been demanding 50 more cameras for one and a half years. Currently 19 cameras have been approved but have not reached the station yet.
