Amid the power sector facing major crisis, Tata Power has announced a 4 per cent drop in electricity bills and those of MSEDCL up to 2 per cent dip in the power tariff with effects from April 1.

On the other hand, Adani Electricity consumers will see a marginal increase of 1-6 paise per unit, stated the order which mentions multi-year tariff plan of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC).

With this, a maximum hike of INR 30 in monthly power bills for those in the 301-500 units (high end) consumption category.

Meanwhile, reports claimed that Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Transport (BEST) will continue to have the cheapest tariff in Maharashtra for low-end residential consumers (0-100 units and 101-300 units) as its rates will remain unchanged in this category, the order stated. However, the state power utility, MSEDCL, continues to have the highest tariffs despite a drop in energy rates.

The order on power tariffs and revision is for five years for the period between 2020-21 and 2024-25 and the order was passed on March 31, 2020.

Besides, as the state did not receive enough coal supply amid rising demand owing to heatwave, the Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut has warned of crucial days ahead.
