The state cabinet has approved the appointment of 8,282 additional security guards to strengthen the security of court complexes and judges’ residences in Maharashtra.
This decision followed instructions from the High Court directing the government to take a policy-level decision regarding the security of courts and judges. The cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The security guards will be provided by the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC).
A public interest petition was filed at the Aurangabad Bench of the High Court at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar regarding the security arrangements in state courts. The High Court had directed the government to take a policy decision on the matter. Following this, the Home Department and the Department of Law and Justice conducted a security survey and submitted a report to the government after review meetings.
According to the plan, 4,742 security guards will be appointed for court premises, and 3,540 security guards will be deployed at the residences of judges and magistrates.
The implementation will be carried out in two phases: the first phase focusing on human resources and the second on providing necessary equipment. Security arrangements will cover the Mumbai High Court, benches, Kolhapur Circuit Bench, district courts, and judges’ residences across the state.
The cabinet also approved a budget provision of INR 443.248 crore for the salaries of these security guards.
