Several people who won homes in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) housing lottery have refused to accept their allotted flats, saying the prices are too high.
In December, BMC conducted a lottery for 426 flats across Mumbai. A total of 373 winners were declared after the application process. However, 96 winners have now given up their allotted homes and returned them to the civic body.
Most of the rejected flats are located in Bhandup and Byculla. According to officials, many winners backed out because they found the flats too expensive.
The BMC will now offer these returned flats to applicants on the waiting list. If the waiting list candidates also decline the homes, the number of vacant flats may increase.
Officials said that the flats were offered according to existing development rules. However, due to the high prices and multiple rejections, some of the units may remain unsold and could be included in future housing schemes.
