The city of Mumbai, over the weekend on July 17 and 18, 2021, experienced heavy rainfall, due to which several areas were flooded. Moreover, the torrential rain also caused damages in areas like Chembur, Vikhroli, Bhandup, etc, where walls collapsed claiming several lives. Responding to the inciednt, the state government has announced a relief package of INR 5 lakh which will be given to the heirs of those who died in this incident.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Following this, Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray also directed the local administration to immediately evacuate the occupants from the dangerous buildings and prevent such accidents. He also visited the sites at Bharatnagar in Chembur, Suryanagar in Vikhroli, Munshi Mahal in Bhandup and reviewed the relief work. Aaditya Thackeray also instructed the officials to offer immediate treatment to those injured in the incident, and offered condolences to the families of those who died. He assured the residents that all measures are being taken by the government.

Present with him were MP Rahul Shewale, MLA Ramesh Korgaonkar, Sunil Raut, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Additional Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagarale, Mumbai Suburban District Collector Milind Borikar, local corporator Umesh Mane, Nidhi Shinde, Rajeshwari Redkar and Deepmala Bade. 

While addressing the media, Aaditya Thackeray said that more than 200 mm of rain was recorded in Mumbai overnight, causing natural calamities at many places. He appreciated the efforts taken by the rescue teams who reached the accident site despite difficulties and started the relief work. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were directed to evacuate the houses and relocate the residents in a safer place, following which, the same was implemented keeping the rising water levels in mind. 

Besides this, the civic body is also work on areas where water conservation is a problem. Addressing this concern, Aaditya Thackeray added that large underground water storage tanks are being constructed for this purpose. Keeping the weather warnings in mind, he appealed to the residents to follow the instructions issued by the administration in order to remain safe during the monsoon.

Two walls collapsed in the city in the midnight on Saturday, where more than 30 lives were claimed. As per reports, the wall in Chembur collapsed on more than five houses and residents immediately informed the NDRF team regarding the same. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed gried and offered condolences to the families who lost their dear ones in the incident. PMO office released a statement regarding the compensation announced for the families of those who lost a member and those who were injured.
