A total of 15 interceptor vehicles were handed over the Highway Police by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to take action against drivers violating the speed limits and traffic rules on the Samruddhi Highway.

This development after slew of accidents have been reported in the last 10 months on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway.

These vehicles will take action against drivers who violate the prescribed speed limit and traffic rules on the country’s second-longest highway.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flagged off 15 Scorpio SUVs in Jamaka, Thane and later were commissioned by MSRDC.

The vehicles, equipped with light bars that blink red, white and blue, along with public address system, first aid kit and fire extinguishers, were handed over to the office of the additional director general of police (Traffic) for 15 Highway Police stations to ensure smooth traffic and prevent accidents on Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Of the total 701 km highway, 600 km between Nagpur and Bharveer near Igatpuri is open to traffic.

As per reports, about 57 lakh vehicles have travelled on Samruddhi Highway so far.

The corporation is ready for the safety of the passengers and has provided many facilities. A central control room has been set up for incidents on the highways through which alerts of accidents/other incidents are given to Rapid Response Vehicles, 108 Ambulance, Highway Police, Maharashtra State Safety Corporation etc. With these vehicles, it will become easier for them to reach the site of incident quickly.

To provide immediate help to the passengers, helpline number boards have been installed on the highway. Apart from this, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been prepared for smooth incident management on Samruddhi Highway and similar work is also done through Incident Management Response System. Also, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will be installed for traffic and incident control on the highway. Rumble strips, different colored flags and various sculptures have been installed every 25 km to attract the attention of highway drivers. Also, speed measuring booths (hooters) have been installed at toll booths, so that vehicles exceeding the speed limit are identified and advised through the Regional Transport (RTO) department.

At most places a protective wall has been built on both sides of the highway and chain link fencing will be installed along the crash barrier to prevent movement of wild animals and stray animals. State-of-the-art Quick Response Vehicles – 21, Ambulance – 21, EPC Patrol Vehicles – 14, Highway Safety Police Station – 13, 30 Ton Crane – 13, 142 security guards have been deployed on Samruddhi Highway for the safety of passengers.
