Update: Maharashtra Government on Sunday issued an order extending the lockdown till midnight of May 31 to contain the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19 in the state. As per the order dated May 17 signed by Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta, the state executive committee has issued directions to extend the lockdown till May 31.

"The calibrated phase wise relaxation or lifting of lockdown orders will be notified in the due course," the order read.

The Narendra Modi government is likely to announce guidelines for the nationwide lockdown 4.0 today. India which has been under a nationwide lockdown since March 25 will enter phase four of the lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic as the third phase ends at midnight.

Earlier, during his address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the lockdown 4.0 will be different in nature and with new rules. Along with this, the Prime Minister announced a special economic package of ₹20 lakh crores to revive economy amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The nationwide lockdown is expected to extend for at least two more weeks till May 31. Meanwhile, the government will ease the restrictions under the lockdown, especially in the orange and green zones. The central government may provide relaxation in relation to public transport.

The Ministry of Railways earlier started limited trains for the passengers. According to sources, the guidelines which will be issued for the lockdown 4.0 may provide relaxation for the metro train services along with road transport and aviation sector.

The airlines in India have submitted reports for their aircraft’s airworthiness to the country’s aviation regulator - Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).

The possibility that the domestic flight service may resume under lockdown 4.0 is likely as the airlines have said that they are ready. However, no clear instructions have been given as of now. The airlines say that they are just waiting to start as soon as the confirmation from the ministry comes.

The Mumbai local train services are also expected to start but with limited capacity and only in non-containment zones under the lockdown 4.0 which starts from May 18. However, if the local train services start in Mumbai, only people working in the essential sectors will be allowed to board the trains.

Earlier, during a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had requested that the local train services should start for essential services. The employees working in the essential sectors should be allowed to board the train on the basis of their identity cards, the CM said.

Again on May 15, Uddhav Thackeray urged the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to direct the railway administration to restore local train service in Mumbai which is the lifeline of the city and will help facilitate daily travel for the essential workers.
