Uddhav Thackeray requests operation of the local train for essential services

Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on May 11, 2020, requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow the resumption of local train services in Mumbai for essential services staff. As the Prime Minister entertained a virtual interaction, Thackeray asked the Centre to structure a specific, absolute direction on the lockdown that will be implemented by states.

Uddhav Thackeray stated that any action on lockdown must be taken cautiously while referring to the second wave of infections in China's Wuhan. "Cases are expected to peak in May, it may peak in June or July also. I have read Wuhan is witnessing the second wave of cases, even WHO has warned about this. So, I suggest that any action on lockdown must be taken cautiously," he said to the media.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that economic activities in several parts of the country have gained momentum and will further gather steam. According to the PM, there has been a global recognition for India's success in handing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prime minister acknowledging the effort made by the state ministers stated "Slowly but surely, economic activities have begun to pick up in several parts of the country. In the coming days, this process will further gather steam. We must realize that the fight against COVID-19 has to be more focussed now,” he added.

India has now entered the final phase of the 54-day nationwide pandemic-induced lockdown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi helf a meeting with the states chief ministers on Monday to discuss the actions to be implemented further by the different states. This was the fifth such meeting between PM Modi and state chief ministers since the pandemic broke out. Meanwhile, India has recorded 67,152 coronavirus cases, with 20,917 recovered patients and 2,206 deaths with Maharashtra witnessing 1,278 fresh Covid-19 cases on Sunday taking its case count to 22,171.
