Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday filed his nomination for the election to the state legislative council on nine vacancies which are scheduled to be held on May 21.

The Election commission earlier announced the election to the legislative council in Maharashtra on nine vacant seats will happen on May 21 and the results will be announced on the same day.

Moreover, according to the EC, the last date of filing the nomination is today - May 11 and the date for withdrawal is May 14. Uddhav Thackeray was accompanied by his son Aaditya Thackeray at Vidhan Bhavan along with other Shiv Sena leaders including Subhash Desai for filing his nomination.

Uddhav Thackeray is constitutionally bound to get elected to either house of the legislature within six months of taking charge and his deadline for the same is May 27. Currently, he is not a member of either house in the Maharashtra legislature.

The Shiv Sena chief will be the second member of his family to contest an election after Aaditya Thackeray who won the Maharashtra Assembly elections from Worli constituency on Shiv Sena ticket in 2019.

In order to avoid a constitutional crisis amid the coronavirus outbreak, the Maharashtra cabinet passed two resolutions recommending Uddhav Thackeray’s name to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for his nomination as an MLC via governor’s quota.

However, after a major delay in Uddhav Thackeray’s nomination to the legislative council, the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders appealed the election commission to announce polls to the legislative council in Maharashtra. Governor Koshyari also endorsed the appeal made by the MVA leaders.

As this happened, the Election Commission announced polls on the nine seats to the legislative council which have been vacant since April 24. The EC earlier postponed the election to the Rajya Sabha and local bodies in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The MVA government is contesting on five seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was contesting on four seats. Uddhav Thackeray is set to enter the Maharashtra Legislative Council unopposed after the Congress withdrew one of its two candidates.
