After the Congress caved into Shiv Sena's demand and withdrew one of its two candidates, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is set to get elected to the state legislative council unopposed. The election to the legislative council in Maharashtra on nine vacancies is scheduled to be held on May 21.

Earlier, Maharashtra Congress President Balasaheb Thorat informed that his party has decided to only field one candidate for the MLC election. Congress earlier announced the candidature of Rajesh Rathod and Rajkishor alias Papa Modi.

However, Congress withdraw the name of one candidate which means that the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will contest on five seats out of the total nine. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded four candidates and is confident about winning the same.

As this happens, the MVA will contest on five seats and the council poll are to be held unopposed giving a clear way for Uddhav Thackeray to get elected to the state legislative council unopposed.

Earlier, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut informed that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was not willing to contest the legislative council poll unless he was elected unopposed. Uddhav Thackeray is not afraid to contest an election but the current situation of the coronavirus outbreak doesn’t demand political battles, Raut added.

Uddhav Thackeray will the second member from his family to contest elections. Aaditya Thackeray, who won from Worli assembly constituency on Shiv Sena ticket, became the first ‘Thackeray’ to contest polls held between September-October 2019.

Uddhav Thackeray took oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister on November 28, 2019, and is not the member of either house - legislative assembly or council. Any minister is constitutionally bound to get elected to the legislature or he/she ceases to be a minister. The deadline for Thackeray to get elected to either house of the state legislature is May 27.

According to EC, the last date to file the nomination is May 11 and the date for withdrawal is May 14. The results will be out on the same day of the polling. Meanwhile, efforts were being made by the ruling side to hold the election unopposed on the nine vacancies.
