Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said that the West Bengal government has failed to give permissions to the Railway Ministry for transporting stranded migrants from Mumbai.

In a video message, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis informed that the Ministry of Railways has asked permission for seven trains from Mumbai to West Bengal to transport migrant workers back to their homes.

“…however, no permission has been given by the West Bengal government. I appeal Mamata Banerjee to give permission for the same immediately so that the migrants can reach their home with ease and don’t have to walk,” Devendra Fadnavis said.

Fadnavis further appealed Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the leaders from the MVA government to persuade West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to provide permission for the special 'Shramik' trains to take migrants back to their respective homes.

On May 5, the West Bengal government refused to accept them as the state government here was waiting for the approval from West Bengal government to send nearly 24,000 migrant workers on two special trains from Thane to Shalimar station in Howrah.

Meanwhile, the MVA leaders including Nawab Malik and Balasaheb Thorat among other have raised concern over states not willing to accept the migrants back. Attacking the state over the same, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat sought directions to be issued by the centre as the majority of the states are not accepting their migrants back.

Moreover, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk to Chief Ministers of the respective states who were not willing to take back migrant workers and labourers stranded in the state due to the lockdown.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh government had asked the Maharashtra government to test migrants for the COVID-19. However, it changed its stance and gave the approval to receive migrants stranded in Maharashtra as per the guidelines issued by the centre. The first train from Mumbai carrying 1,140 migrants to UP was started on Friday.
