The father of the Indian Constitution, Bharat Ratna BR Ambedkar was not only a renowned jurist, economist, and politician but also played a crucial in promoting campaigns against social discrimination towards the untouchables, and supporting the rights of women and labour. As a tribute to the veteran leader, a monument has been erected in his memory at Chaityabhoomi, Dadar.

The Akhand Bhim Jyoti (an eternal never-ending flame) was inaugurated by Union Social Welfare Minister of State, Ramdas Athawale on September 11. The memorial will be commemorating Dr. Ambedkar by keeping the Bhim Jyot lit 24x7.

This is the country's and the city's second Akhand Bhim Jyot as a similar memorial was built near Oval Maidan, Fort in front of Babasaheb Ambedkar's idol. On Mahaparinirvan Din, the Coordination Committee had asked BMC to build the memorial and accordingly, Praveen Pardeshi, the BMC Commissioner decided to give a nod to the initiative.

The Akhand Bhim Jyot has been built at a cost of ₹21.54 lakh whereas the beautification around the structure has cost BMC ₹42.74 lakh. The structure 8.7 feet tall and has been kept under an 8 mm thick glass. The Akhand Jyot will receive gas for 24 hours through BMC.
