Mumbai’s only zoo, Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo commonly known as Byculla zoo is all set for its next stage expansion plan. In its third revamp phase, the zoo is bringing in a lion from the Junagadh Zoo in Gujarat and several other animals and birds acquired from various zoos throughout India that will be kept in seven special enclosures.

Byculla zoo has received a nod from the civic standing committee for the plan to construct enclosures for a tiger, lion, swamp deer, nilgai, barking deer, sambar deer and an aviary in the zoo. The project will cost ₹56 crore, which covers fetching the fauna as well as the construction of the enclosures.

Zoo director Sanjay Tripathy said that the office is in talks with various zoos to acquire the animals. The office is in a discussion for a lion with the zoo in Junagarh, Gujarat. For a tiger, they are approaching Kanpur, Chennai and Aurangabad zoos.

The Kanpur zoo meanwhile has already agreed to give a pair of swamp deer.

The plan is being closely followed behind the successful completion of the penguin enclosure project which has increased the footfall to a great extent for the zoo. Tripathi pointed out that all the seven enclosures like acrylic mesh, rockwork etc must be ready within a period of 16 months, before the arrival of the animals.
