Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that ‘automatic vehicle licence inspection lines’ would be set up at 17 districts places, and ‘automatic vehicle fitness certification centres’, which will have stricter norms to test the driving skills of people, at 23 places across the state.

Speaking at the legislative assembly, he said that these measures will be implemented to prevent road accidents and visible changes will be seen soon.

This was in response to a question raised by the Member Ashok Chavan regarding increasing road accidents and fatal deaths happening in the state. Senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan said there was no monitoring of those riding vehicles without helmets or seatbelts. Many drive under the influence of liquor, and overtaking from the wrong wide is rampant. Even deteriorating road conditions contribute to accidents.

Admitting that increasing accidents was a cause of concern, state PWD minister Dada Bhuse said the government had stepped up monitoring and checked 25,324 vehicles owners. Of them, 3,151 were found guilty on various counts and the government had recovered INR 2.26 crores from them.

CM Shinde further stated that speed limit has been fixed for vehicles on Samriddhi Highway. At least 60 to 70 lakh vehicles have traveled so far and various measures have been taken to prevent accidents on the Samruddhi Highway. Ramblers are installed every 10 km. Along with this, the Chief Minister said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is also being used.

The Chief Minister also noted that the work order for the track will be given in two months. Arrangements will be made to give advance notice to the concerned owners before the vehicle fitness certificate expires.
