In a city which is perennially water starved, the requirement at the moment is to not waste a single drop. Considering this, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to reuse the recycled wastewater for other purposes besides drinking.

The population of Mumbai has been steadily increasing in the last few years. Looking at the growing population, Mumbaikars need about 4,500 million liters of water per day. At present, BMC is supplying 3,850 million liters of water.

As many as 10,000 liters of water has been made available for reuse from the wastewater treatment plant set up at Bhandup complex. As the need for drinking water is going to increase in the coming years, this water can be used for washing vehicles, gardening and at public toilets.

Keeping this in view, the administration had decided to set up wastewater treatment plants at Worli, Dharavi, Vesave, Bhandup, Ghatkopar, Bandra and Malad. Out of these, wastewater recycling project at Bhandup complex was commissioned recently.

The municipality has decided to appoint consultants for various tasks like formulating a policy on recycled water use, tracing water buyers.

The civic body is currently depending on rain to quench the thirst of Mumbaikars. Water scarcity occurs in Mumbai during summer months if the city receives low rainfall and people have to face water cuts. Hence, the BMC will be taking steps to mandate harvesting of rainwater for various other non-potable building activities as well. This would reduce the load on water supply by at least 1350 MLD (50 per cent of the total 2,700 MLD required for sewage work).
