The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and state-appointed administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal has asked all 24 ward officers in mumbai to ensure that all garbage related complaints are addressed immediately. In addition to this, he has also asked officers to regularly inspect their wards. This development comes two weeks ahead of Ganeshotsav.

Further, Chahal has also ordered his officials to prioritise complaints related to cleanliness issued by Ganapati Samanvaya Committee. The commissioner has also said that officers from wards wherein maximum number of hygiene related complaints will be registered would be penalised, while ward officials who maintain cleanliness in their ward will be felicitated.

Moreover, after the ward officer in Byculla was transferred post Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s visit to Mazgaon. During his visit, he had expressed displeasure about sanitation issues in that ward. However, civic officials maintained that wards are being regularly inspected.

Clarifying further, ward official stated that the commissioner has asked us to inspect wards twice a day, which is going to be bit problematic due to dearth of manpower. They have ramped up our action and are addressing all complaints immediately. The main issue is in slum areas, since waste from residential buildings is dumped in a disciplined manner inside garbage vans. This can only be solved in entirety through policy making.

Meanwhile members of Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti had met CM Shinde last week, and were asked to ensure the city remains clean.
