On Monday, December 6, two international passengers tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Mumbai, after this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) awaits the genome sequencing results of others who tested positive with a travel history from the National Institute of Virology, Pune, mentioned reports.

Till Monday, according to the BMC, 16 of those residing in Mumbai with a travel history tested positive for coronavirus. One of whom tested positive for Omicron. Additionally, nine "high-risk" contacts of these individuals have also tested positive. From these "high-risk" contacts, one also tested positive for the Omicron variant. 

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, additional municipal commissioner, Suresh Kakani elaborated on how they haven't attained an answer from the test results of the others that were sent to NIV Pune. Adding that they are unsure if they are negative for Omicron. They have asked the NIV to declare the results so that a determination can be made about the Omicron variant. 

Until December 5, 2021, based on the data with the BMC, an aggregate of 4,480 travellers arrived in the island city from "high-risk" countries. The Maharashtra government has categorized these countries that include South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. 

Additionally, nearly 30,000 travellers have been screened in the state, with 10 testing positive for the Omicron variant so far.
