Maharashtra: Nearly 30,000 Travelers Screened, 10 Test Positive For Omicron So Far

On Tuesday, December 7, Maharashtra Health Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awate stated that nearly 30,000 travelers were checked for COVID-19 at many airports. From these, 10 people tested positive for the Omicron variant so far, reported news agency, ANI.

Earlier, six Omicron cases were found in the civic limits of Pimpri-Chinchwad. Back then, Rajesh Patil, the municipal commissioner had mentioned that genome sequencing of 10 additional COVID-19 positive patients was awaited. 

With this tally, an aggregate of 10 cases of the Omicron variant have been reported in Maharashtra making it the highest in India

Additionally, on Monday, December 6, two cases of the new variant were found in Mumbai when a 37-year-old who travelled from South Africa and his friend who had travelled from the USA, flew back on November 25, tested positive for Omicron. 

On the other hand, Maharashtra's first Omicron case was reported in Kalyan-Dombivali on December 5 when a 33-year-old unvaccinated South Africa returnee to Kalyan-Dombivali tested positive for the variant. 

Amid the Omicron scare, state cabinet minister, Aaditya Thackeray requested the Centre to curtail the minimum age for vaccination as well as permit booster doses. Thackeray wrote the letter to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and gave multiple suggestions post his interaction with medical practitioners who are closely monitoring the coronavirus situations.
