On Saturday, December 5 the Maharashtra Health Department stated that a 33-year-old unvaccinated man who had returned to Kalyan-Dombivali from South Africa, tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19, stated reports. This becomes the country's fourth case of the new variant.

Rajesh Tope, the state health minister on Saturday stated that the probable third wave of coronavirus in the state may be because of the Omicron variant if precautions aren't undertaken. However, he added that the new strain is mild and that it doesn't cause mass hospitalizations.
Based on a statement from the state health department, the infected individual arrived in Mumbai from Cape Town via Dubai and New Delhi on November 24. The department added that the individual's 12 "high-risk" contacts and 23 "low-risk" contacts have tested negative.
Moreover, 25 of his co-passengers on the Delhi-Mumbai flight have also tested negative. According to the statement, the passenger got a mild fever on November 24, but no other symptoms were seen. Therefore, the mild symptomatic patient is being treated at the COVID-19 Care Centre in Kalyan-Dombivali.
The statement also mentioned that since December 1, 2021, eight passengers have tested positive for coronavirus and their samples were sent genome sequencing. Moreover, a field survey of all the international passengers who have arrived since November 1 is being undertaken.
