On Tuesday, November 30, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal stated that the civic authority is tracing all those passengers who landed at Mumbai airport from South Africa in the previous two weeks to probe the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, stated reports.

Based on accounts, between November 11 to 27, according to records, 1,026 passengers arrived from South Africa. During his conversation with a TV channel, Chahal elaborated on how the BMC has the addresses of the travellers. Adding that they found how almost 100 of them are from Mumbai, whilst the rest are from other parts of Maharashtra.

According to Chahal, all passengers are being traced, those from the city are found and tested. They have been asked to remain in-home quarantine. If one tests positive, the samples are sent for genome sequencing.

Furthermore, those travellers coming from “at-risk” countries to Mumbai airport will now have to undergo compulsory institutional quarantine for a week. Chahal mentioned now how they will be tested on the second, fourth and seventh day of quarantine.

On the other hand, those arriving from “non-risk” countries will have compulsory undertake an RT-PCR test. While speaking about the civic authority’s preparedness for the new variant, he is reported to have asked the officials of jumbo centres to undertake the necessary checks, so when required the facility can commence.

Moreover, Chahal elucidated on how the city has adequate oxygen supply with the arrangement of 578 tonnes of oxygen.

Whilst speaking on the postponement of reopening schools in the city, Chahal remarked that the next 15 days were important to comprehend the new variant, thus the said decision was undertaken.
