BMC collects over ₹16 crore fine from people not wearing masks

Last month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had begun a drive to create awareness among citizens to wear mask. However, it comes across as disciplining the maskless is turning out to be a tough task for BMC's clean-up marshals.

According to reports, BMC has taken action against over 8 lakh citizens, who were found without mask between April 20 and December 23 and has collected a fine of total ₹16.77 crores.

In order to prevent corona infection, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had ordered a fine of INR 200 for citizens walking outside their houses without masks. Also, it was directed to take action against the citizens walking without masks within the boundaries of all the 24 divisional offices in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation area. The BMC marshals also started providing free masks to the concerned citizens. The masks given for free are also being recorded on the receipt of the relevant penalty.

On October 14, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had called a meeting and ordered to take punitive action against the citizens who are seen around without masks and spit in public places. Accordingly, the administration has formed teams for this in every administrative department office.

While the BMC has ramped up testing, and it has increased by three-folds. However, still is considered as the best defence against the contagious coronavirus. Many believe that when the vaccine comes along, the days of wearing a mask will be the thing of the past. However, as per experts even if a vaccine arrives, people will need a mask for a long time. The civic body has also begun preparations for a massive vaccine delivery programme and has been training health workers in inoculation.
