The air quality in Mumbai and surrounding areas is worsening day by day. In the view of this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken several steps to curb the air pollution.

The civic body has decided to install air purifiers at five locations in the city where several construction projects are ongoing. These locations include JVLR junction, Chembur, Mulund, BKC and Dahisar.

Along with this, BMC has also started using mist/fogging machines and anti-smog guns in many areas across the city.

The civic body also washed 154 kilometres of roads in the city on Sunday, November 5. Civic officials said that 657 km of roads will be cleaned in total, for which 121 tankers have been deployed.

Fines from air polluters

The BMC has launched a stringent campaign to punish those responsible for pollution during construction and demolition activities. The BMC has collected penalty of INR 4.7 lakh from several vehicles in the city over the past three days for flouting air pollution mitigation norms.

Between November 3 to 5, 2023, a total of INR 4,71,692 has been collected as fine from the offenders.

These vehicles were penalised for transporting debris without covering them and dumping them openly in public places.

The fines were imposed to ensure dust mitigation guidelines are followed strictly by those who are not adhering by it, an official said.
