The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will install air purifiers at five locations in the city where several construction projects are ongoing. These locations include JVLR junction, Chembur, Mulund, BKC and Dahisar.

It is pertinent to note that this development comes as the city continues to reel under depleting air quality and increasing air pollution. Owing to this, the health of Mumbaikars is in danger. As a result, respiratory disorders are also increasing due to atmospheric pollution levels.

Of these five locations, three spots — Mulund, Chembur and BKC — recorded poor air quality on Thursday, November 2, with AQI ranging between 200 – 300.

The total cost for the installation and maintenance of the system is estimated at INR 10 crore, a data procured from the civic body stated.

On the same day, Mumbai Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar said that six different air purifiers will be installed near Bhakti Park, SK Patil Garden in Sion, Byculla Zoo, and Diamond Garden in Chembur.

On Thursday, November 2, the overall AQI in Mumbai touched 169. CPCB data showed that the worst air quality was recorded in Colaba in the island city where the AQI stood at 230, followed by Sion (224), Mulund (220), Chembur (217), Malad (203) and Bandra East (201).

Additionally, the BMC is set to expand its Air Quality monitoring stations by installing sensor based monitoring units. The city currently has 21 Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) in the city, as shown in the CPCB dashboard.
