According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced the procedure of dismantling four of Mumbai’s nine jumbo COVID-19 centres that were opened in 2020 to address the rising coronavirus cases.

Based on accounts, the facilities situated in Goregaon, Dahisar, Kanjurmarg and Mulund have commenced curating inventories of their medicines, Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants, equipment, and Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) storage tanks.

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani was quoted in a narrative by the Hindustan Times elaborating on how the physical dismantling of the structure will soon follow. Similarly, the jumbo facility's staff were also hired on a contract basis.

Cumulatively, the four centres have a capacity of 8,200 beds, cited reports. Kakani added that the medicines and equipment will be distributed to tertiary and peripheral hospitals, municipalities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in accordance with their demand.

It has been reported that the BMC has already received requests from the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation and the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation. However, Mumbai’s requirements will first be addressed.

The additional municipal commissioner reportedly elucidated that initially the structure will be emptied after which it will be dismantled. The four jumbo centres that are set to be dismantled have 26 PSA plants and eight LMO tanks which will be distributed within the city’s hospitals.

Kakani reportedly further added that members of the state’s COVID-19 task force were consulted and the decision was undertaken to eventually commence the dismantling process.
