As Mumbai's COVID-19 model management for the second wave is being lauded by various organisations at the national level, including the Supreme Court.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has also received applause from all levels. However, Chahal attributed his success to the Chief Minister saying that this was possible only with the support of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

This statement has been made by Iqbal Singh Chahal in an interview. The situation was aggravated by the eruption of the coronavirus in the financial capital city, Mumbai.

Though, the state government and the civic body had faced criticism from the opposition. The former chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis accused the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of hiding the actual number of deaths of novel coronavirus patients in the city,

Clarifying all the rumours, Iqbal Singh Chahal said, "I consider myself lucky for many things. Firstly, the Chief Minister gave me all the freedom to make decisions. So, I could take all the necessary decisions immediately for the betterment of city. However, this freedom does not belong to my colleagues who work in many other cities.”

“Secondly, I joined the Mumbai Municipal Corporation in May last year and since then I had made it clear to my co-workers that the coronavirus would not go away soon. Hence, we need to prepare for a big battle. I convinced them that the preparation would last for one, two, or three years. Since then, we started building the system. Now all these systems are working in autopilot mode. At present, even if 2,000 or 10,000 coronavirus patients are found in the city every day, there is no stress on the systems. The system works exactly as planned," added BMC chief IS Chahal.

Meanwhile, NITI Aayog CEO had also praised the BMC yesterday, May 10, for the Mumbai model of COVID-19 management.

“Centrally allocating beds, estimating oxygen storage facilities, not only allocating private hospital beds and creating dashboards to monitor them, activating war rooms to monitor patients' health. Mumbai's Corona management model is inspiring. Congratulations to Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and his great team,” said Amitabh Kant, CEO of the Policy Commission.

Earlier last week after the Supreme Court's remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also called Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and praised his fight against coronavirus.
