On June 9, 2020, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Shirish Dixit, passed away due to coronavirus infection.

Dixit (54) served as the engineer in the water supply department of the municipal corporation. He was announced dead on Tuesday morning when his family members called to informed the authorities about his health as he was not feeling well. He was asymptomatic and was pronounced dead when a team of officers reached his residence.

Reports state that as of June 9, 2020, a total of 55 BMC employees have passed away due to the viral infection and more than 1700 employees have tested positive for the coronavirus. On the other hand, the number of COVID-19 cases amongst police officers seems to reduce with time. 

Data released by the state health ministry on June 8, 2020, shows that the number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai has crossed the 50,000-mark and the tally in the state has reached 80,000. 

Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra announced 'Mission Begin Again' where selected services were allowed to resume in several parts of the state including Mumbai, Pune and other regions. Visuals from Mumbai, over the last few days, show that the people have not been following social distancing norms, as advised by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The government has issued strict guidelines in the country, to ensure that the spread of the virus is contained and reduces with time. 

On June 5, 2020, once the lockdown restrictions were partially lifted, several residents from Mumbai stepped out of the homes. Further, some offices resumed operations with 10 per cent staff, but despite the small number being given the permission, officials witnessed long queues and crowding at bus stops for BEST buses.
