BMC releases education budget; allocates INR 2945.78 crores

The civic body's estimates for education are set at INR 2945.78 crores, which is marginally higher than that of the previous year wherein the budgetary estimates were INR 2944.59 crores.

On Wednesday, February 3, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed of the allocation of funds for its education budget for the year 2021-22.

Moreover, the budgetary estimates for the year are set at INR 2945.78 crores, which is marginally higher than that of the previous year wherein the budgetary estimates were INR 2944.59 crores.

The civic body further informed that it is to spend INR 88.87 crores on providing free scholastic materials to school children. The primary department is to receive INR 70 crores whereas the secondary department will receive INR 18.87 crores.

Meanwhile, the BMC has given INR 1 crore to the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya to run 29 libraries. Moreover, the corporation stated that in view of the pandemic, the equipment’s with regards to COVID-19 would cost INR 15.90 crores. According to sources, the BMC is to purchase masks, pulse oximeters, sanitisers and infrared thermometers. Moreover, it is to buy 326 new water purifiers for schools at a cost of INR 1.31 crores

Furthermore, the civic body has allotted INR 10 lakhs for setting up Model Music Center at NM Joshi Marg BMC School. The music will be played by composer Mayuresh Pai. On the other hand, the BMC launched 40 YouTube channels for online tutoring during the lockdown. These courses are taught in English, Hindi, Marathi and Urdu which has been viewed more than one lakh times.

Amidst the pandemic, at a time when BMC, India’s richest civic body, is facing a cash crunch, the budget has been formulated in order to prioritise expenditure in key areas such as health, education, and infrastructure-related developments such as roads.
