According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, and now administrator, Iqbal Singh Chahal has decided to do away with the scheme of putting up dedicated committees to assist the administrator in clearing proposals presented before the civic authority.

Based on accounts, Chahal, in a circular dated April 7 remarked that the proposal sent by the various civic departments as well as ward offices will now be directly addressed and sent to the administrator for final approval.

Previously, narratives were doing the rounds that a committee that would include the four additional municipal commissioners would assist the commissioner.

Three committees were to be constituted, similar to that on the lines of statutory standing, improvement committees and a general body with additional and deputy Municipal Commissioners.

It has also been reported that the BMC is looking to upload the approved proposals on its website and the mobile application. Earlier, Chahal had asked for a few days to constitute a committee to clear financial proposals and undertake other policy decisions.

For those unversed, all committees that had corporators as their members ceased to exist from March 7 because the term of the civic body ended then.

Moreover, on the issue of OBC reservation, the Maharashtra government had passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly that local body elections will not be held without OBC reservation. Therefore, the BMC elections 2022 have been delayed.
