The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, which are scheduled to take place in February next year, are likely to be postponed, reports stated.

The civic body is expected to undertake a fresh exercise of remapping its wards from northwest to southeast Mumbai, owing to the Maharashtra cabinet's decision to increase the number of corporators from 227 to 236. It is possible that the elections might happen in April or May.

A senior minister from Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), while talking to the Free Press Journal, said that the civic body cannot add nine wards in the delimitation exercise that was recently completed. They will have to revise it.

After receiving fresh directions from the State Election Commission (SEC), they will have to conduct a new exercise. It will be possible, after the Maharashtra government issues an ordinance on an increase in the number of wards as the state legislature session is not underway.

Kiran Kurundkar, SEC Secretary, said that after they receive an ordinance they will give necessary directions to the municipal corporation.

Delimitation is usually done after every ten years, and the BMC has rectified the boundaries of around 60 wards, and 20% have been changed.

It is also likely that all nine corporators will be added in Mumbai suburban region. Meanwhile, on Monday, November 22, BMC conducted its first physical meeting after a gap of 20 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
