As Mumbai sees a huge surge in the new coronavirus cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put several curbs to contain the outbreak of the infections.

However, a senior civic official on Monday, January 3, declared that there was no proposal to put any restrictions on suburban train travel in Mumbai as of now.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, January 4, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that there will be a need to impose a lockdown in Mumbai if the daily COVID-19 cases cross the 20,000 threshold.

The BMC official stated that even though the number of daily COVID-19 cases and positivity rate have been increasing in the city, the civic body was working on preventive measures and was ready to handle any crisis.

If needed, the Maharashtra government will take a decision on the issue in consultation with the state task force on COVID-19 as it pertains to the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), official added.

He also mentioned that at present 90 per cent of the coronavirus patients are asymptomatic and only 4-5 per cent patients are being admitted to hospitals and the number of serious cases is negligible.

Besides, the civic body has also issued fresh guidelines for sealing buildings in Mumbai, where multiple patients will be detected with the infection.
