As per reports, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has till date spent more than ₹1,050 crores to cover COVID-19 related expenses across the city.

Even though the cases of coronavirus are now in control, Mumbai has reported the maximum number of COVID-19 cases in the county. According to the BMC officials, the expenses have occurred due to the procurement of medical equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, N-95 masks, 3-ply masks, gloves, face shields, hydroxychloroquine, thermometers, body bags, protective eye-wear, sanitisers etc.

Moreover, the civic body has spent finances on the augmentation of existing health infrastructure and setting up new facilities such as COVID-19 care centres and jumbo facilities, hotel bills to lodge frontline staff, recruitment of fresh staff on contractual basis and distribution of food in the initial days of the outbreak.

However, the revenue of the civic body has been affected, as per reports. The BMC had earlier reported a decline in more than 80 per cent of revenue in the first quarter of the financial year this year, from the same period last year.

As per the data shared by the financial department of the BMC, the civic body has collected ₹4,949.55 crores between April 1 to June 30 last year but just 19.5 per cent of that or ₹966.30 crores over the same period this year. The pandemic and the extensive body of work across the city has to a large extent pushed the municipal corporation towards the dried up end.
