After 18,000 files of Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) were burnt to ashes, Samajwadi Party leader Rais Sheikh on Sunday raised his deep concern, in the standing committee, regarding the safety of official documents of Municipal Corporation with Stock Holding Corporation India Limited (SHCIL).

Municipal Corporation along with Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), MHADA, and LIC have their official documents stored in SHCIL’s godown in Mahape.

Earlier in 2012-2013, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gave its documents to SHCIL for scanning and keeping them safe in their godown. The documents were scanned and locked in the locker by the company after the BMC gave the contract to SHCIL.

Earlier in December 2017, in the fire incident where 18,000 MHADA’s files were burnt to the ground, the old documents of the municipal corporation were also present.

“MHADA informed about its files have been burnt, then what happens to the official documents of BMC?” Rais Sheikh questioned.

Sheikh said that the administration should decide if the files are to be saved or burnt. “Why the administration is spending billions to save documents with such risk?”

Supporting Sheikh, BJP leader Manoj Kotak and MLA Amit Shah said that all the information about these files shall be brought out. Therefore, the cancellation of the contract given to the corporation should be withdrawn.

Standing Committee Chairman Yashwant Jadhav ordered the administration to investigate the issue and submit a report to the committee.
