There have been reports of several cases of government files being burnt or disappeared and it is not a new phenomenon. Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) and the Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA) have fallen victim to similar cases earlier.

In order to prevent the same and keep the official documents safe, MHADA transferred all its files to a company called ‘SHCIL’ (Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited) at Mahape. However, the result of this prevention came out to be shocking as 18,000 files were burnt in the company’s fire accident.

Earlier on December 4, 2017, a fire broke out in the fourth compartment of the company. Several reports have said that, in this fire, 18,000 MHADA’s official files were burnt to ashes. A senior MHADA official informed that the complaint regarding the same accident was filed in Turbhe police station.

However, the officials have clarified that the 18,000 files which are burnt have a digital backup but for future, the MHADA will not be kept with SHCIL.

The company claimed that it follows a sophisticated system to safeguard the files of various government offices by digitalising the original files and almost four lakh MHADA files are stored with the SHCIL.
