As Mumbai experiences a spike in cases of coronavirus, as many as 1,539 fresh COVID-19 cases were found in the city in a single day on Wednesday, March 10. In view of the situation, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued strict instructions to the housing societies further issuing a directive.

According to data shared by the BMC, 90 per cent of the new COVID-19 cases found in Mumbai in the last two months are found in housing societies due to which there has been an impending need to impose restrictions on the premises of societies to curb the spread of the contagious disease.

Moreover, the BMC has directed officials to take strict action against those violating rules in such residential buildings that have more patients than in dense, cramped and slum areas. In addition, the BMC has appealed to housing complexes to inform the administration about the violators of COVID-19 rules. The civic body now also plans to intensify the crackdown on restricted residential buildings. Those who flout home-quarantine rules will compulsorily be shifted to institutional quarantine and an FIR will be registered against them.

On the other hand, with Maharashtra extending its lockdown, the civic body has limited its containment zones to 20. It has also informed that the daily growth rate of cases has increased from 0.17 per cent on February 18 to 0.32 per cent in March. Andheri continues to be the most affected area with a doubling rate of 163 days, while Sandhurst Road is the least affected ward with a doubling rate at 420 days.
