The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiatives to curate electricity from the Mumbai Coastal Road Project by putting up solar panels, reported the Hindustan Times. Aaditya Thackeray, the state environment minister has asked the civic authority to pick areas for putting up the solar panels on the coastal road project from Nariman Point and Worli. Based on the proposal, the authority will have to recognize space on the cycle track and divider that will be built as part of the current coastal road project. Last week, this proposal was brought to light by Thackeray of the signing of an MOU relating to climate change alongside officials from the BMC.

He was quoted saying by the Hindustan Times that the coastal road will have over 90 hectares of green area and they wish to attain carbon sequestration through a multitude of schemes. First of which includes an international call for design landscape and urban forest. Adding that with the existing cycle track, walking pathway and promenade, he has asked the BMC to consider including solar panels above the cycle track or the divider to see if solar energy can be made. He also mentioned that open spaces won’t be encroached on by the panels.

The coastal road in the city will be one of its kind intra-city roads to have solar panels after which it may be considered for other arterial roads as well.
